November 3rd 2014
SKY SIGNAL PROBLEMS FOR BBC / ITV etc updates 3rd NOVEMBER 2014.
(please note this update is only concerning BBC/ITV/etc FREESAT CHANNELS
and only covers Tarragona down to the Ulldecona area in Spain, all SKY subscription
channels are not effected, neither are ITV2/3/4 or C4 Ireland on a subscription package )

Where to Start !. :-

From around the 4th October 2014 we expected a drop off in signal see “K SATELLITES below”
which should have lasted for around 10 days then correct themselves.

What has actually happened is a full further weakening of signal in the Morning and also late afternoon
going into early evening on some channels. More so during the later part
of October and as we see at present going into November.

Having spoken to a few “experts” on this type of phenomenon they are of the opinion that it is
just going to be temporary and area specific in certain European countries, however
they can not give us any indication of exactly when our signal should improve again.

Measuring the actual signals off both Astra 2E and 2F there are times when it does show a
complete signal blackout so where we would have seen channels before on a good signal
with a large dish , there are none during certain times of day. It also has a huge bearing
on exactly where the signal is trying to be viewed as in the areas mentioned above the
signal has become so “fragile” even down to the type and make of receiver will have a
bearing on it. The worst signals are from L’Ametlla De Mar going North where previously
we had all Freesat channels we do get to near
complete Blackout on Freesat during certain parts of the day.

At present we have to wait to see how the signal performs over the next few weeks.

There are a few things to look at first :-

Make sure nothing has grown over or near to your dish during the summer.

Ensure that the Clear plastic end cap is still in place on the end of the Aluminium
Feed Horn for the LNB. If not “Spiders” will make a nest inside and this will effect the signal.

Check to see if anyone by mistake has leant on the dish or it has
been pushed in any way taking it slightly off signal.

( As the satellite signal is SO FRAGILE at present just by pushing on the dish could loose it )

If you are presently using a standard sky receiver there are ways to improve your signal :-

Please take careful note , as this has all only recently happened we have spent many
hours going through equipment and talking to suppliers to find what
receivers have the best tuners ( strongest ) built in.

At present our findings are as follows :

All Standard NON SKY HD receivers although will work with some channels we are finding
during this time that you need a SKY HD NEW generation receiver to pick up channels.
( also please note that on a sky receiver you can see signal
quality etc built in, this has NO bearing on the signal quality for FREESAT)

SKY Thompson HD receiver is NOT SUITABLE as it has a weak tuner.

( easy to find out turn the receiver upside down and the manufacturer is shown on the serial number label )

We are finding at present the best receivers for signal are the latest generation SKY
branded HD receivers and DRX 900 series HD receivers which is shown on the label underneath.

Even with the best possible tuner there will still be loss of channels but with
HD channels ITV is stable ( this email is being written 03/11)  also BBC 1 HD is the best of “the bunch”.

( There is also a stable Channel 4 , but unless you have a white SKY card available

that has not completely switched off then it is not possible to activate ,
easy to try go to ADD channels and use this frequency to find channels then save and see if
C4 is active in OTHER CHANNELS :-   12480, V , 27.5 , 2/3 )

Please take note of these channels which show the best on a HD receiver , however at
other times when the signal picks up the next best will also show on a standard sky receiver or similar :-

BBC 1 -  Use BBC1 SCOTLAND HD  default number 951

BBC1 WALES HD default number 952

BBC 1 - Use BBC 1 OXFORD default number 965

___________________________________

BBC2 – NO good transponders available we have to wait for a better signal.

____________________________________

ITV -  Use ITV HD default number 178

ITV –  use   other channels : (add channels first)

10994 , H , 22 , 5/6

or 11052 , H , 22 , 5/6

or 10906 , V , 22 , 5/6.

___________________________________

CHANNEL 4 – IRELAND ( see above)

CHANNEL 4 -  Use Channel 4HD  default number 227

_________________________________

CHANNEL 5 -  Use Channel 5HD default number 105

CHANNEL 5 – Use Channel 5 default number 171

__________________________________

If all else fails we do have another system on it’s own specific receiver for :-

 BBC1 / BBC2 / ITV / Channel 4 (NO channel 5) and several Radio channels that uses a
different satellite on Biss codes with a 1 metre dish. This is all working OK and does
not get effected by solar outage or natural radiation etc. ( it does work on Biss codes
that do change several times a year, when this happens it normally
takes on average around 48 to 72 hours to restore the viewing remotely)

This does get back the above channels on a stable basis,
should our signal get any worse going forward.   Click on this link :-

K SATELLITES INFO FROM OCTOBER

K SATELLITES WILL BE HIT BY SUN OUTAGE FROM 4TH OCTOBER
Satellites serving the UK will soon be passing directly in front of the sun in the mornings, starting around the 4th October (9th October in Scandinavia)
For about ten days, signals from the UK beams of Astra 2E and 2F will be completely lost for up to 14 minutes during every morning just after
10.30 am CET (GMT+1) in Spain, Portugal, southern France, Eastern Germany, Austria, Italy and Scandinavia.
The explanation:
Sun outage is a twice-yearly event, and happens when the sun, satellite and earth are in a straight line during the spring and autumn equinoxes.
A satellite dish always has to point to the satellite 24 hours a day, even if this means the dish is pointing straight at the sun. Random
electrical noise from the sun overwhelms signal in weak areas. Dramatically worse signal-to-noise ratio results
in total loss of data. The British Isles are unaffected.
Strong signals also weaken, but within normal margins.
At night, satellites pass through the umbra, or area of total eclipse, forcing
operators to switch to built-in batteries, compensating for the absence of sunlight.
For some weeks either side of total eclipse, satellite reception in fringe areas is disrupted owing to
7the reduced amount of sun the satellite's solar panels receive as they pass through the penumbra, or outer shadow.

There is one compensation for the loss of signals. It's the perfect time to check whether there is anything shading
your dish, such as trees or foliage. Any obstruction will cast a shadow on your dish at sun outage,
revealing that signals will be reduced all year round. Green leaves are as effective as lead in blocking satellite signals.

Any site with full sun at this time is a good site for a new dish installation.
Of course, this only works if the sun is shining...
